Viola vs. Cello. A Musical Comedy!

Saturday, March 4 - 5:30 pm
Aula Magna, Rectorate Building
Piazzale Aldo Moro 5, Rome

On Saturday, March 4, Sapienza University will host a musical performance by Enrico Bronzi (cello), Vittorio Ghielmi (bass viola), Ghielmi Lorenzo (harpsichord) and Luca Pianca (lute).

The performance aims to revive the musical debate that in the first half of the eighteenth century juxtaposed musicians who preferred a bass viola and lute to those who began employing the cello, a new instrument of Italian origin. This contraposition inspired Parisian lawyer Hubert Le Blanc to write a comic text entitled "La défense de la basse de viole contre les entreprises du violon et les pretensions du violoncelle."

The performance will alternate Enrico Bronzi performing music by Vivaldi and Geminiani and Vittorio Ghielmi with music by Marais and Forqueray, while Luciano Bertoli reads passages from Le Blanc’s work.
