Sapienza is the top university in Italy

Sapienza Tops US News Rankings

Sapienza University places first amongst Italian university according to the Best Global Universities Ranking 2017 by US News (and 124th worldwide). The US News Ranking, which takes into account 1250 universities in 74 countries, rewards research productivity measured through the number of scientific publications. Last year, Sapienza was ranked 2nd in Italy and 138th at the international level.

Starting this year, the Us News Ranking has also been enriched with rankings by subjects in which Sapienza placed 25th worldwide in Physics and 36th in Mathematics.

"This achievement comes only 15 days after the CWUR Ranking, which recognizes Sapienza as the best university in Italy and confirms the relevance and reputation of our university at the international level," points out Rector Eugenio Gaudio. "It is a global improvement that we are strongly striving to achieve and it is also confirmed also by the growth of applications and funding for research activities, both at national and international level."

The US Ranking, which is compiled in synergy with Clarivate Analytics, takes into account 12 indicators, each of which contributes to define the global score (which for Sapienza is 63). The criteria used by Us News aim to enhance academic research and reputation at the global and local level. Publications, citations, and international collaborations are fundamental to this methodology, with particular relevance for the overall and local reputation of research activities, the publication of scientific articles and volumes, citations and their impact, as well as international conferences and collaborations.

Sapienza is the first university in Italy, the 33rd at the European level and 129th internationally, in terms of the international reputation of research projects. First in Italy and 77th internationally for participation in international academic conferences and for the number of academic citations received in publications at a global level. Moreover, Sapienza is first amongst Italian universities for the number of publications that fall within the best 10% of the most cited works and for those that fall within the best 1%.

Centre for World University Rankings

The Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) 2017 places Sapienza University first amongst Italian universities and 84th worldwide, 6 positions higher than last year.

The ranking, which lists the top 1000 international universities – including 48 Italian universities – is based on 8 indicators:

“This result is a further confirmation of the quality of Sapienza research and education,” pointed out Rector Eugenio Gaudio. While our country is often called to improve and match the competences of our graduates with the requests of the working world, this positive evaluation by the CWUR – an extremely accurate ranking based on objective benchmarks – reveals that we are on the right road.”

For the sixth year in a row, Sapienza is the top-ranking Italian university thanks to the quality of our academic staff, calculated on the basis of professors receiving important international awards (Sapienza places 30th globally, 4 position better than last year), educational quality, defined by the number of alumni with prestigious international careers in academia (52nd globally, 7 position ahead of last year) and for the university’s impact on research in terms of mentions (105th, 21 positions better than last year).
