On Wednesday, March 21, Sapienza will host a conference entitled “Marsa. The Sumerian Port of Abu Tbeirah” to illustrate the recent achievements of the joint Italo-Iraqi archaeological mission in southern Iraq, where a team of Sapienza archaeologists have unearthed a Sumerian Port dating to the third millennium BC.

This discovery of the port in Abu Tbeirah that once stood on the coastline of the Arabic Gulf will allow archaeologists to write a new chapter in the history of Mesopotamia, overcoming the common stereotype according to which Mesopotamian cities were surrounded by cereal fields and irrigated by artificial canals. It is becoming increasingly evident that the delta of the Tigris and Euphrates and the surrounding marshlands played a fundamental role in the development of this great civilisation.

The archaeological mission, which is coordinated by Professors Licia Romano and Franco D'Agostino, began in 2017 thanks to funding by Sapienza University and the Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry. Further funding will be provided by the Fondazione Bardelli.

Participants will also have the opportunity to admire Amjed Rifaie’s exhibition on Arabic calligraphy.

We recommended interested parties complete the registration form.
