Archaeology in Africa Workshop

On December 6-7, the Sapienza Department of Classics will host the “1st Workshop on Archaeology in Africa. Potentials and Perspectives for Laboratory & Field Research" to address theoretical, methodological and financial issues concerning archaeology in Africa.

The workshop will open on December 6 with a lecture by Peter Mitchell, Professor of African Archaeology at Oxford University, entitled "Carpe diem: Building African Archaeology for the Twenty-First Century".

Day two, on December 7, following a welcome by Sapienza Rector Eugenio Gaudio, the workshop will turn to methodological, political and economic aspects from an Italian perspective, as well as specific case studies, with Enzo Lippolis, Director of the Sapienza Department of Classics.

The workshop will conclude with remarks by Ettore Janulardo, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Barbara Barich, International Association of Mediterannean and Oriental Studies, and Paola Buzi, Professor of Egyptology and Coptic Civilisation at Sapienza University.
