Every year, as part of the activities dedicated to the internationalization of research, Sapienza University hosts a number of internationally renowned visiting professors from some of the best universities and research centers around the world.

The following professors are currently collaborating at Sapienza University:

Professor Filippo Mancia - Columbia University, New York (USA). Visiting professor from 01/10/2016 to 30/01/2017.

Professor Filippo Mancia, invited by Prof. Beatrice Vallone, will spend three months at Sapienza International Medical School. He will teach within the Degree Course in Medicine and Surgery and the Doctoral Course in Biochemistry. In addition, he will carry out research activities in the field of the structure and function of membrane proteins, and more specifically on testosterone 5-alpha-reductase. During his visit, he will define agreements between Sapienza and the Physiology and Cellular Biophyisics Department of Columbia University and bilateral training and research projects within the Marie Sklodowska Curie (H2020) initiative.

Professor Nicholas Tibor Longford- Imperial College London (United Kingdom). Visiting professor from 09/01/2017 to 08/02/2017.

Professor Longford was invited by Professor Roberto Zelli to spend one month at the Statistics Department. During his stay, he will carry out research activities about statistical analysis of longitudinal data in observational study. In particular, his research will focus on the aspects of measurement of economic inequalities among people and social groups.

 

Professor Stefano Basagni - Northeastern University (USA). Visiting professor from 15/01/2017 to 31/07//2017.

Professor Basagni, invited by Professor Fabio Pellacini, will spend seven months at the Computer Science Department. During his stay, he will investigate the relationships between networking and multi-media content with particular emphasis on enabling underwater networking for archaeological discovery and display. The objectives of the collaboration include the definition of new underwater multi-modal architectures to satisfy the requirements of graphic and multimedia applications, and the determination of
optimal way of data transport for timely and reliable monitoring, surveillance and archaeologic mission support.

Professor Samuel Paolucci – University of Notre Dame (USA). Visiting professor from 01/02/2017 to 05/05/2017.

Professor Samuel Paolucci was invited by Professor Mauro Valorani to spend three months at the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. The main purpose of his visit is to collaborate with Professor Valorani on research dealing with a novel computational method based on wavelets, and on reduced models of reacting mixtures. In addition, he will present lectures in his areas of expertise, i.e. wavelet methods, continuum mechanics, and fluid mechanics.

Professor Alessandro Bausi - Universität Hamburg (Germany). Visiting professor from 07/02/2017 to 06/05/2017.

Professor Bausi, invited by professor Paola Buzi, will spend three months at the History, Cultures, Religions Department. During his stay, he will cooperate with ERC PAThs project (Prof. Paola Buzi) and with ERC TraCES and Beta Masaheft (Hamburg). Moreover, he will deliver a seminar on Late Ethiopian Language and Literature at the hosting department, mainly for students of the Course “Egyptology: from training to research" and to PhD students.

Professor Symon Podilchak – Heriot-Watt University (United Kingdom). Visiting professor from 12/02/2017 to 27/02/2017 and from 20/08/2017 to 06/09/2017.

Professor Symon Podilchak, invited by Professor Paolo Baccarelli, will spend three months at the Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications Department. During his visit, he will develop his research on leaky-wave antennas for wireless applications within the field of data connections and wireless energy transmission.

Professor Victor Eremeyev - Politechnika Rzeszowska im Ignacego Lukasiewicza: Rzeszow (Russia). Visiting Professor from 15/02/2017 to 15/05/2017.

Professor Victor Eremeyev was invited by Professor Ugo Andreaus at the Structural and Geotechnical Engineering Department. During his stay, Professor Victor Eremeyev will carry on activity of mathematical methods development to study the dynamic response of new materials with internal microstructure like the acoustically resonant materials, materials with significant effects of interface, etc.

 

Professor Luciano Boi – Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (France). Visiting professor from 01/03/2017 to 31/03/2017.

Prof. Luciano Boi will spend one month at Sapienza University in the European, American and Intercultural Studies Department, invited by Prof. Franco D'Intino. During his stay, prof. Boi will collaborate with prof. D'Intino on the issue of the connexions between science and literature. More specifically, prof. Boi will contribute to a research project exploring the meeting-points of mathematical and physical concepts and literary themes such as those of nature, form and infinite.

 

Professor Giuliano Giustarini – Mahidol University (Thailand). Visiting professor from 01/03/2017 to 31/05/2017.

Professor Giustarini, invited by Professor Bruno Lo Turco, will spend three months at the Oriental Studies Department. His main activity will consist in a study on the definition of mental processes in Buddhist literature, with special reference to the Suttapiṭaka and related exegeses. He will also teach an introductory seminar on Buddhist thought, with readings from the Pali Canon.

Professor Galina Evtushenko – Russian State University for Humanities (Russia). Visiting professor from 05/03/2017 to 10/04/2017.

Professor Galina Evtushenko, invited by Claudia Scandura, Professor of Russian Language and Lliterature at Sapienza University, will spend one month at the European, American and Intercultural Studies Department. During this time she will give lectures and screenings of movies and videos with a discussion to follow on Russian cultural themes.

 

Professor Fabio Montermini - CNRS / Université de Toulouse 2 Jean Jaurès (France). Visiting professor from 14/03/2017 to 13/04/2017.

Professor Fabio Montermini, invited by Professor Marie-Pierre Escoubas, will spend one month at the Methods and Models for Economics, Territory and Finance Department. The aim of his visit is the study, through corpus-based research methods, of lexical and morphological dynamics that can be observed in texts with specialized language. Mainly, Professor Montermini will examin the role of morphologically complex words in the structuring of specialized texts, in relation to current language, in particular in the processing of specialized terminologies.

Professor Jianqiang Nie - Wuhan University (China). Visiting professor from 15/03/2017 to 14/04/2017.

Professor Nie, invited by Professor Giuliana Scognamiglio, will spend one month at the Legal Studies Department. During his stay, Professor Nie will carry out the research program on "Fundamentals of Chinese Business Law Under a Comparative Perspective with European Law" and will present lectures to Ph.D candidates at the hosting department.

 

Professor Ed Tronick – University of Massachusetts (USA). Visiting professor from 15/03/2017 to 15/04/2017.

Professor Tronick was invited by professor Anna Maria Speranza to spend one month at the Dynamic and Clinical Psychology Department. During this time, Professor Tronick will lead some seminars for doctoral students. In addition he will attend and contribute to some research meetings and he will perhaps serve as the keynote speaker at a special conference.

Professor Meynen Gerben - Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Netherlands). Visiting professor from 01/04/2017 to 30/06/2017.

Professor Gerben, invited by Professor Stefano Ferracuti, will spend three months at the Neurology and Psychiatry Department. The main purpose of the visit is research and teaching on forensic psychiatry and psychiatry & ethics. Topics of interest include: decision-making competency, legal insanity, and neurolaw (this concerns the impact of the neurosciences on the law, in particular criminal law).

Professor Valeria Pulignano – KU Leuven (Belgium). Visiting professor from 01/04/2017 to 30/04/2017.

Professor Pulignano teaches Sociology of Labour and Industrial Relations and is Principal Coordinator at the Center for Sociological Research (CESO) at the Social Science Faculty of KU Leuven (Belgium). She was invited by Professor Domenico Carrieri to spend one month at the Social Sciences Department. During her stay at Sapienza she will give seminars on her current research projects on labour markets dualisation and employment relations in a comparative perspective in Europe and she will establish collaboration with the research group of DIESSE lead by Professor Carrieri around the topics abovementioned. In addition, she will work together with Professor Carrieri on the more general topic of comparative employment and industrial relations.

 

Professor Leo Liberti - CNRS LIX Ecole Polytechnique Palaiseau (France). Visiting professor from 01/05/2017 to 31/05/2017.

Professor Liberti was invited by Professor Fabio Tardella to spend one month at the  Methods and Models for Economics, Territory and Finance Department.  During his stay he will conduct research in the field of Alternating Current Optimal Power Flow (ACOPF). This activity is carried out in the framework of a wider collaboration made by projects cofinanced through the COST programme, the Thomas Siebel Foundation and the Gaspard Monge pour l’Optimisation (PGMO).

 

Professor Ibtissam Medarhri – Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Rabat (Morocco). Visiting professor from 02/04/2017 to 03/05/2017.

Professor Ibtissam Medarhri was invited by Professor Massimo Guarascio at the Civil, Building and Environmental Engineering Depaertment. During her stay she will give /lectures in the field of Transport Infrastructures and Safety and Risk Analysis subject, she will carry out seminars concerning probabilistic models to analyse the accidents rate and the reliability of transportation infrastructures. The educational activities will be complemented by simulation software development for the realization of laboratory work and projects for individual student work.

 

Professor Carl Ollivier-Gooch – University of British Columbia (Canada). Visiting professor from 03/04/2017 to 12/05/2017.

Professor Carl Ollivier-Gooch was invited by Professor Renato Paciorri to spend one month at the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. The two will work together on simulation of transonic flows, which are of great interest in aircraft design. Specifically, they will collaborate on improving mesh generation support for shock fitting methods.

Professor Magdalena Krol - Szkoła Główna Gospodarstwa Wiejskiego University (Poland). Visiting professor from 19/04/2017 to 26/05/2017. 

Professor Magdalena Krol, recent winner of a ERC Starting Grant, was invited by Professor Alberto Boffi to spend one month at the "Alessandro Rossi Fanelli" Biochemical Sciences Department. During her stay Professor Magdalena Krol will conduct interdisciplinary research focused on the use of special carriers of anticancer drugs and the study of ferritin transport from macrophages to cancer cells.

Professor Aldo Borlenghi - Université Lumière Lyon 2 (France). Visiting professor from 24/04/2017 to 24/07/2017.

Professor Aldo Borlenghi was invited by Professor Enzo Lippolis to spend three months at the Ancient World Studies Department. Thanks to a long-standing scientific collaboration with the above mentioned department and with Professor Lippolis, he will conduct research focused on the study of electoral spaces in the roman world. Through a series of conferences Professor Borlenghi will present the development of his research. In parallel, he will present some aspects of his research on the roman colony of Lyon, and particularly on the federal Sanctuary of the Three Gauls.

Professor Alessandro Delfanti – University of Toronto (Canada). Visiting professor from 01/05/2017 to 31/07/2017.

Professor Delfanti, invited by Professor Mauro Capocci, will spend three months at the History of Medicine section of the Medical-Surgical Sciences and Biotecnologies Department. During his visit he will conduct research on the transformation of scholarly publishing and academic labour in a digital age by examining emerging publishing practices in biomedical research. The research will focus on digital preprint archives such as biorXiv, as well as academic social networks such as ResearchGate and Academia.edu.

Professor Eleonora Canepari - Aix-Marseille Université (France). Visiting professor from 01/05/2017 to 31/07/2017.

Professor Eleonora Canepari, invited by Professsor Renata Ago, will spend three months at the History, Cultures, Religions Department. The research that she will carry on in the local archives and aiming at strengthening ties between Università La Sapienza and Aix-Marseille Université, within the Labortoire International Associé MediterraPolis (CNRS-AMU-La Sapienza), will be focused on the demonstration that urban mobility played a key-role in the making of the early modern city making the “transient” individuals able to gain access to the basic resources such as homes and employment. The methodology of the research is characterized by micro-analysis and the use of interdisciplinary insights.

Professor Eckhard Hein - Berlin School of Economics and Law (Germany). Visiting Professor from 01/05/2017 to 31/05/2017.

Professor Hein will spend one month at Sapienza University Rome, invited by Professor Claudio Sardoni of the Social Sciences and Economics Department. He will work on issues of financialisation, distribution and tendencies of stagnation after the financial and economic crisis 2007-9. The focus will be on the further development of post-Keynesian macroeconomic theory in this area, on the one hand, and on the empirical examination of different regimes before and after the crisis, on the other.

Professor Jorgen Vitting Andersen - Centre d'Economie de la Sorbonne (France). Visiting professor from 01/05/2017 to 31/07/2017.

Professor Vitting Andersen, invited by Professor Giulia Rotundo, will spend three months at the Methods and Models for Economics, Territory and Finance Department. During his stay, together with Professor Rotundo, he will work on contagion phenomena in financial markets during crisis, using mostly approaches from complexity theory. Moreover, Professor Vitting Andersen will also teach a module of the topic of Socio-Finance.

 

Professor Catherine Wihtol de Wenden – CNRS CERI Sciences Po Paris (France). Visiting professor from 01/05/2017 to 01/06/2017.

Professor Wihtol de Wenden was invited by Professor Cristina Giudici to spend one month at the Methods and Models for Economics, Territory and Finance Department. This visit will allow Professor Wihtol de Wenden and Sapienza Professors Ambrosetti and Giudici to gain visibility thanks to debates, courses, conferences on the two books edited by academics of Sapienza University, to which Professor Wihtol de Wenden participated: Migrations in the Mediterranean (Elena Ambrosetti and Donatella Strangio) and Le nuove migrazioni (Cristina Giudici). It will also allow them to finalize and prepare the publication of the next international conference on “Europe and free circulation for Europeans since the Rome treaty of 1957 to 2017”, that will be hosted at Sapienza in July 2017.

Professor Wolfgang Müller-Funk - University of Wien (Austria). Visiting professor from 02/05/2017 to 31/05/2017.

Professor Wolfgang Müller-Funk was invited by Professor Mauro Ponzi to spend one month at the European, American and Intercultural Studies Department. During his visit, professor Müller-Funk will conduct research on literature and cruelty. In addition, he will participate in a conference on Weimar Republic and will present his new book “Theories des Fremden” to professors and PhD students of the Department.

Professor Tahira Probst – Washington State University (USA). Visiting professor from 03/05/2017 to 03/06/2017.

Professor Tahira Probst was invited by Professor Claudio Barbaranelli to spend one month at the Psychology Department. Their research collaboration develops and tests a multilevel model of individual- and organizational-level factors in predicting Italian employee health, safety, and well-being outcomes in response to economic stress. Specifically, they examine the role of the current financial crisis with its concomitant economic stressors (e.g., job insecurity, reliance on contingent workers) toward predicting safety attitudes, behaviors, and accidents among workers within Italy. Moreover, they will examine contextual factors that can operate as demands (e.g., organizational production pressure; job insecurity climate) or resources (e.g., safety climate; organizational support) for employees.

Professor Maja Seric - University of Valencia (Spain). Visiting professor from 04/05/2017 to 03/08/2017.

Professor Maja Seric was invited by Professor Maria Vernuccio at the Management Department. During her stay, Professor Maja Seric will conduct research activity in the field of integrated marketing communications, brand equity, hospitality marketing. This research is part of a wider collaboration made by projects co-financed by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the Association of Sciences of Croatia.

Professor Thomas Boothby – The Pennsylvania State University (USA). Visiting professor from 06/05/2017 to 03/08/2017.

Professor Thomas Boothby, invited by Professor Donatella Fiorani, will spend three months at the History, Representation and Restoration of Architecture Department. During his stay, he will carry on research activity into the construction of Early Christian and medieval Churches in Rome, dealing with the relationship between the masonry and construction techniques used on these buildings, during the initial construction or with later transformations or consolidations. This investigation will be accompanied with a research into the contemporaneous approaches to structural design, mainly looking at the evaluation of the dimensional and geometrical aspects of design that assure the solidity of the structure. The methodology used for previous research on historical buildings in the United States, and already verified on some gothic churches in France, will be adapted to the structural design of the buildings objects of the research.

 

Professor Barry Howard Schneider – Boston College (USA). Visiting professor from 23/05/2017 to 23/06/2017.

Professor Schneider will be hosted at the Social Science Department by Professor Lorenza Di Pentima, Grazia Attili and Alessandro Toni for one month. During his stay, Professor Schneider will carry out research activities on the development of social skills in childhood in relation to the style of education adopted by parental figures according to normal or pathological tendencies.

 

Professor José Antonio Mendoza Rica – Universitat Politècnica de València (Spain). Visiting professor from 02/06/2017 to 02/07/2017.

Professor Mendoza Rica, invited by professor Agostina Chiavola, will spend one month at the Civil, Building and Environmental Engineering Department. During the stay, he will teach at the doctoral program Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering and will also collaborate in the research topic “pharmaceutical compounds elimination from wastewaters”, working on eventual future joint projects in H2020 and other relevant calls.

 

Professor Nicola Marzari - L'École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland). Visiting professor from 05/06/2017 to 09/07/2017.

Professor Marzari was invited by Professor Francesco Mauri to spend one month at the Physics Department. During his stay, he will conduct research in computational condensed matter physics.

Professor Michael Inzlicht – University of Toronto (Canada). Visiting professor from 17/06/2017 to 18/07/2017.

Professor Michael Inzlicht was invited by Professor Salvatore Aglioti to spend one month at the Psychology Department. The main purpose of this visit is the research on the social neuroscience of empathy and compassion.

Professor Agathoklis Giaralis - City, University of London (United Kingdom). Visiting professor from 25/06/2017 to 25/09/2017.

Professor Giaralis, invited by Professor Maurizio De Angelis, will spend three months at the Structural and Geotechnical Engineering Department. During his stay, he will engage in collaborative research with Faculty members of the host department on the tuned mass-damper-inerter, a vibration control device developed under grant EP/M017621/1 funded by EPSRC in UK, for the protection of building structures to dynamic loads such as those exerted by earthquakes and strong wind fronts. He will also deliver a module for PhD students of the host department on “Advanced Concepts of Structural Dynamics”.

Professor Eirini Mavrommati - Hellenic Open University (Greece). Visiting professor from 01/09/2017 to 30/09/2017.

Professor Mavrommati, will spend one month at the Computer, Control, and Management Engineering Department. During her stay, Professor Mavrommati will conduct joint research with Professor Chatzigiannakis and will deliver lectures on the subject of User Experience in Pervasive Computing / IoT environments.

 

Professor Dorian Lamis - Emory University School of Medicine (Usa). Visiting professor from 10/09/2017 to  10/12/2017.

Professor Dorian A. Lamis, invited by Prof. Maurizio Pompili, will be hosted by the Neurosciences, Mental Health, and Sensory Organs Department. Professor Lamis will spend three months conducting research investigating risk and protective factors for suicide among individuals diagnosed with a variety of mental illnesses, with a particular focus on patients with bipolar disorder. One of the primary goals of this collaborative effort is to advance our understanding of suicidal behaviors in psychiatric patients. Professor Lamis will also hold several informative lectures and seminars on suicide risk assessment/treatment and intervention approaches addressing various related psychiatric disorders.

Professor Padraic Monaghan – Lancaster University (United Kingdom). Visiting professor from 11/09/2017 to 11/10/2017.

Professor Monaghan was invited by Professor Anna Pecchinedda to spend one month at the Psychology Department. People have a preference for symmetric stimuli: symmetric shapes are processed more quickly than other shapes, and symmetric pictures are preferred to non-symmetry. Why is this? During his stay, professor Monaghan will combine experimental and computational approaches to processing both shapes and words to address this question. The work will determine how symmetry interplays with the structure of the brain's two hemispheres.

Professor Arash Karimipour – Islamic Azad University (Iran). Visiting professor from 15/09/2017 to 15/12/2017.

Professor Karimipour was invited by Professor Annunziata D’Orazio to spend three months at the Austronautics, Electrical and Energetics Engineering Department. The main  purpose of this visit can be addressed as the investigation of fluid flow and heat transfer of MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems). Moreover the particle base method of LBM (lattice Boltzmann method) and also the well-known CFD approach will be developed for the simulation of nanofluid flow in the mentioned systems.
