At the fifth edition of the Breakthrough Awards, Sapienza Physics Professors received the prestigious award for their work on Project Ligo. The project, in fact, contributed to a major new breakthrough in Physics with the discovery gravitational waves, as announced by Fulvio Ricci on February 11, 2016.
Professors at the Sapienza Physics Department who received the award on December 4 in Silicon Valley include: Professors Paola Leaci, Sergio Frasca, Piero Rapagnani and Fulvio Ricci; Researchers Alberto Colla, Andrea Conte, Sibilla Di Pace, Irene Di Palma, Federica Mezzani and Luca Naticchioni and Doctoral Student Ornella Piccini. The award was also presented to researchers at the National Nuclear Physics Institute of Rome: Pia Astone, Ettore Majorana, Cristiano Palomba and Paola Puppo.
Breakthrough Awards present substantial prizes to scientists who push innovation in the fundamental fields of physics, mathematics and life sciences.
