MOOC: Origins of Mediterranean Civilisation

Sapienza University will host a new MOOC (massive open on-line course) on the Coursera Platform, entitled "At the Origins of the Mediterranean Civilization: Archaeology of the City from the Levant to the West - 3rd-1st millennium BC," taught by Professor Lorenzo Nigro from the Faculty of Humanities.

What are the deepest roots of the mix of cultures that we call “Mediterranean Civilization”? What are the exchanges which developed its greatest accomplishment: the city? And which elements contributed to creating the customs, ideas and innovations that compelled peoples to confrontation and hybridizations for millennia?

Ranging from pottery to metallurgy, from gastronomy to architecture, from art to religion, archaeology can help us answer these questions with these people’s buried remains. A privileged point of view is provided by the ancient Phoenician city of Motya, located exactly at the centre of the “sea in the middle.” Through a live experience of excavation, with images taken from the field, this course will let you touch the many pieces of the great mosaic of the Mediterranean Civilization.

The course, which is accessible to a general, well-educated audience interested in the history and archaeology of the Ancient Mediterranean, begins on May 9 (in English), while the Italian version began on May 1.
